Antón Capitel, Luis Moreno Mansilla y Emilio Tuñón On the figure of Rafael Moneo On one side, three old disciples of Rafael Moneo. Antón Capitel was in his Projects class during the schoolyear 1968-1969, and eventually wrote his thesis on Moneo; he has followed Moneo's work closely ever since and written numerous articles on it. Luis Moreno Mansilla and Emilio Tuñón, students as well of Rafael Moneo, worked in his studio from 1981 to 1992, taking part in a good number of projects. Across the table, Tectónica editors Carlos Quintáns and José María Marzo. The following conversation about the figure of Moneo reveals a commonly held admiration for his professional and personal attitudes. |

Luis Rojo de Castro Kursaal Cultural Centre and Auditorium in San Sebastian Rafael Moneo The Kursaal is the fruit of an attempt to assimilate concerns characterizing the multi-disciplinary spirit of our time: sculpture, nature, art... through purely architectural mechanisms. The crystalline volumes anchored in the sand are conceived of as a marker in the landscape; however do not renounce a respectful dialogue with the city and with its surroundings. Cubes that are not cubes but figures, a surface of fluted glass, opaque and continuous, but with a clearly ornamental character... manifesting the struggle between expressionism and abstraction underlying this project. The competition description insisted on the intention that the Kursaal should maintain the condition of a topographic incident "...two gigantic rocks stranded at the mouth of the Urumea", linked with the rest of the natural landmarks of this part of the coast.
